The Dying Embers
Based in The Cowichan Valley, The Dying
Embers are fast becoming the word on the
street. With a successful debut CD, a trail
of burning dance floors and a loyal
following of “Embers”, these guys are
definitely a band on fire, dead set on
making the summer of 2006 too hot too
handle.
After spending the bulk of 2005 holed up at
The Woodshop Studios, Singer/songwriter
James Pender emerged squint-eyed and smiling
with ten original recordings that would soon
become “Lazy Mutinado”
From a basket of burnt years, broken
melodies and a boat full of lyrics, Pender
cleverly chronicles the adventures and mis-adventures
of an overly observant songwriter. “A song
is always better than the real story.” From
the crowded bar intro of the rocker Innocent
Victim right up until the last note of the
Poguesy
Lazy Friends, Mutinado succeeds in creating
an incredible upbeat atmosphere littered
with slick melodies, solid dynamics , and
enough rumblin’ ear candy to make a deaf man
cry.
In November of 2005, Pender recruited
“Honeybox” drummer Keith Gallant, “Mexican
Bus Rides” Hugh Smith on bass and local
guitar slinger Craig Watson to perform the
songs live. With James’s wife Stace stepping
in on piano, and history patiently waiting
The Dying Embers were born.
For the next 3 months while the band set out
to bring the CD to life, Pender began to
blaze a path for the Embers. Thru supportive
local media, the web and some good old
fashion propaganda, the band received a
great rush of exposure and they had yet to
even play their first show, but on February
11th, the Embers finally delivered.
Playing to a more than packed house, fans
finally got their first taste of the living,
breathing Dying Embers.
After opening the show with a champagne
salute to the band, Pender and the gang
blazed thru the night like a gas soaked
Cadillac burning off one song after another
as if they were already rock n roll
classics!!!! Before the first song was even
finished the dance floor was jammed, the
front doors had to be locked and everyone
agreed that if the energy at the show that
night was any indication of things to come,
then the Embers are well on their way to
becoming a “band on fire indeed!”
With a full tank of momentum, the band
continued to stomp out their acoustic laced
rock songs thru out the valley and it was at
their next big show “Mutiny at The Brig”
that they secured a coveted spot at Sunfest
06.“Mutiny at The Brig” also proved to be a
stepping stone for the Embers.
“As a band, I found we’d drifted a little
off track a little too soon. We hadn’t yet
presented the songs 100% and already I could
see us passing them by”. With news of
Sunfest on the horizon, Pender realized that
the Ember machine had to slow down, re focus
on the album and up the ante in order to
fully deserve the invitation. It was during
this time and without pleasure that Craig
was replaced by Jeff Layher on electric
guitar. Craig’s a great guitar player but
he’s got enough on the go in his own rock n
roll world.” And so, with a new found vigor
and a match to the can, The valleys own
Dying Embers gear up for their biggest show
to date.
